Kitesurf Travel Guide to Madagascar
Everything you need to know to plan your dream kitesurf trip to Diego Suarez.
Why is Madagascar a world-class destination?
Located in northern Madagascar, the Diego Suarez region (Antsiranana) is home to what many consider one of the best kitesurf spots in the world: Sakalava Bay.
Unlike often overcrowded European spots or those at the mercy of unpredictable weather, Sakalava offers incredible wind statistics thanks to the Varatraza, a powerful trade wind that blows non-stop from April to November.
When to go?
The season runs from mid-April to end of November. During this period, you can expect wind (between 20 and 35 knots) 9 days out of 10. The water is warm (26-28°C), a simple lycra or shorty is enough.

- How to get there: International flight to Antananarivo (TNR), then domestic flight to Diego Suarez (DIE).

Visa, money and health: what to prepare before you leave
The Malagasy visa
The tourist visa is obtained on arrival or online (e-visa). In 2026, expect €10 for a stay of fewer than 15 days (laissez-passer), €35 for 16 to 30 days and €40 for 31 to 60 days. It is paid in cash, so cash is essential. Find all the details in our Madagascar visa guide.
Local currency
In Madagascar, the currency is the ariary (MGA), at around €1 ≈ 5,000 Ar. ATMs accept Visa and Mastercard in Diego Suarez, but bring euros with you: the visa and many payments are made in cash. All the details in our money and payments guide.
Health

How much time should you plan?

Your pre-departure checklist
- Passport valid at least 6 months after your planned entry, with a few blank pages.
- Visa: check the rates when you book (€10 to €40 depending on duration) and keep the amount in cash.
- Euros or dollars in cash: the visa and some payments are made in cash.
- Return ticket and first-night booking for immigration.
- Sunscreen, lycra and hat: the sun and the strong Varatraza wind are felt quickly.
- First swimwear in the carry-on: in case checked baggage hits a delay.

Frequently asked questions about the trip
What is the best time to go?
From mid-April to the end of November, the Varatraza blows steadily. Travel light, accommodation and food are available on site as explained in our sample itinerary.
Do you need a laptop or just a phone?
A smartphone is enough: 4G covers the bay well, and weather apps, transfers and lesson booking all happen in one place.
Can I come alone as a beginner?
Yes, most of our students arrive alone and leave with groups of friends. The spot atmosphere and shared sessions make meeting people easy.
Good reflexes on the ground
Water & hydration
Plan 3 litres of water a day: wind and sun make you sweat fast. Prefer sealed bottles, avoid ice in isolated bars.
Sun protection
SPF 50 cream, surf lycra and a cap under the helmet. A sunburn on your core can ruin three weeks of sessions.
