My coach verdict
If I had to choose one spot in the Indian Ocean, I'd choose Sakalava. Not out of chauvinism, but because of wind consistency. The Varatraza is the only wind in the world that blows practically every day of the season, without interruption, and with the right intensity for kitesurfing. No dead season, no slack days, no surprises.
Reunion has fancier infrastructure, Mayotte a calmer lagoon, Nosy Be tropical island charm. But for the pure rider, for the quantity and quality of sessions, Sakalava wins.

The cost of living and budget choice
The cost of the trip varies strongly from one spot to another. In Madagascar, count the international flight (€900-1,500), the domestic ticket (€150-250), accommodation (€15-60/night) and private coaching at €45-47/h. When to go to the Indian Ocean?
The ideal window broadly covers the dry season: May to November, when the trade wind blows over most islands. In Madagascar, the Varatraza season April to October offers wind 9 days out of 10; in Réunion, the SE trade winds dominate from May to November; Mayotte is at its best from May to October. Every island has its own character
Nosy Be charms with its tropical vibe, turquoise beaches and the option to combine kitesurfing, diving and whale watching from July to October — with slightly less consistent wind than Sakalava.
Réunion impresses with its full infrastructure and active kitesurf scene, at the cost of a higher budget and more capricious wind depending on the coast. Mayotte offers the calmest lagoon in the Indian Ocean, ideal for starting out safely.
