Wind in Diego Suarez: a gift from nature
Diego Suarez enjoys a dry tropical climate with a powerful wind season called varatraza. This thermal wind, created by the temperature difference between the land and the Indian Ocean, blows almost constantly from April to October. This is what makes this region one of the best kitesurf spots in the world.
April to October: Varatraza Season
This is THE ideal period to kite in Diego Suarez. Winds blow 20 to 35 knots almost every day. Side-onshore direction, stability, power — everything is in place. It's also the most popular period, so book early!

- Temperature: 25–30°C
- Rain: Almost none
- Ideal for: All levels, especially intermediate and advanced riders
November to February: Mild Season
Winds are more moderate (10–20 knots) and less consistent. Perfect for beginners who want to learn without the pressure of strong wind. The water is warmer, the atmosphere more relaxed.

- Ideal for: Beginners, holidays, exploration
March: Pre-season
Wind starts to pick up. The first sessions of the varatraza season are brewing. Fewer people, softer prices, and often very pleasant conditions.

- Ideal for: Experienced riders, great deals
September–October: End of Season
Wind gradually calms down. The last sessions of the season are often the most memorable — magical sunsets over the lagoon.

My coach advice
If you're coming for kitesurfing, plan your trip between April and October. The best conditions are found in June, July and August. But April and May already offer excellent sessions with fewer crowds. As an IKO coach, I recommend a stay of at least 10 days to fully enjoy the spot and progress.
