Sakalava Beach — Overview
Sakalava Beach is located in Diego Suarez, in the north of Madagascar. It is the most famous and best-performing kitesurf spot on the island. With 320 wind days per year, its varatraza season (April–October) offering winds from 20 to 35 knots, and its protected lagoon with a sandy bottom, it is a paradise for kiters of all levels.
Unlike many tropical spots, Sakalava offers a rare combination: strong and consistent wind, a large enough lagoon to ride safely, and turquoise water that makes every session memorable. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced rider, this spot has everything to win you over.
Why Sakalava is #1
Guaranteed Wind
Varatraza season from April to October. Consistent winds of 20 to 35 knots. Ideal side-onshore direction for safe riding.
Protected Lagoon

Other Spots to Discover
If Sakalava is the undisputed king, Madagascar offers other interesting spots:
- Ramena — Ideal for windfoil and long-distance sessions. Less crowded, quieter atmosphere.
- Diego Suarez Bay — Urban spot, ideal for wingfoilers. Easy access from town.
- Nosy Be — The island of perfumes also hides great kitesurf spots for a holiday.
But for performance, wind consistency, and lagoon quality, Sakalava remains the best choice.
Coach Tips for the Spot
As an IKO-certified coach with 15 years of experience at Sakalava, here are my tips:
- Beginners — Come early in the season (April–May) for moderate winds (15–20 kts). The lagoon is perfect for learning.
- Intermediate — High season (June–August) offers the best conditions to progress in foil or freestyle.
- Advanced — September–October sessions combine strong wind and thermals for guaranteed big air.
- Gear — 9m² to 12m² kite depending on your weight. In high season, a 7m² can be useful on big days.
